Don't Get Done Get Dom Appeal
Well, it's the start of another year and almost time to commence the preparation of a new challenge; six Pyrenean Tour de France mountains by biycle in one day!
Within the last two weeks, I have received some fantastic news; a BBC programme called Don't Get Done Get Dom have agreed for me to appear on one of their programmes.
Don't Get Done Get Dom is a programme in which consumers on a London High Street are asked if he/she/they are buying at that time. If the answer is yes, the presenter Dominic Littlewood, who has appeared in several BBC1 programmes such as Homes Under The Hammer and Beat The Burglar, gets one hour to go into as many shops as possible and get the best possible price, simply by haggling.
I approached the production Company Flame TV with an idea. Basically with six mountains in one day in mind, I certainly need a newer bike, one which is more responsive to power transfer, has a more suitable frame geometry for mountainous terrain and is significantly more lightweight.
The idea is that I raise the equivalent of the retail price of a 2007 Trek Madone 5.5 SL complete bike, take this money into the show and Dominic negotiates with several bike shops in London to save me as much money as possible. Whatever money I have left in my hand after purchasing the bike will be donated to Quiddenham Children's Hospice. Preliminary estimations reveal that I will save in the region of £800.00.
In another twist, my current bike will be presented at auction with the proceeds also going to the same cause. Of course, I will raise further funds for the Hospice independently, between February and June.
I commit myself to doing further fundraising efforts in the years to come, with challenges getter harder and harder. I'm convinced the more mountains I ride up / the more difficault the rides, the more money will be raised.
On 18 and 19 January, I will be heading to London to be filmed for the show. At the time of writing this article, I have raised £400.00 towards the cost of the bike and have 18 more days in which to obtain a further £1,900.00.
There are a couple more reasons why it will be of benefit to appear on national television. Firstly, the website will be known nationally, so a significant amount of money should be raised. Secondly, as I continue to recover from depression, I hope to inspire other sufferers that there is a way forward. I hope to share my experiences with viewers and pass on ideas which I have tried and used to some success.
